How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax

Hair length, exfoliation, timing and what to expect. Everything you need to feel ready for your first Brazilian wax in Ashburn.

Booking your first Brazilian wax can feel like a big step. The good news: a little preparation makes the appointment faster, more comfortable and longer lasting. At Bare Skin Studio, Ashburn's new luxury waxing studio in Brambleton, we walk first-timers through every step. Here is exactly how to get ready.

What is a Brazilian wax?

A Brazilian wax removes hair from the entire bikini area, front to back, including the labia and between the buttocks. You can leave a small strip or triangle in front if you prefer. It differs from a bikini line wax, which only cleans up hair that shows outside a swimsuit. Not sure which is right for you? Our services page breaks down every bikini and intimate option.

Let your hair grow to the right length

Hair should be about ¼ inch long — roughly the size of a grain of rice. That usually means two to three weeks of growth after shaving. Shorter hair is hard for wax to grip, so it breaks instead of coming out at the root. Longer hair is fine; your esthetician will trim it before waxing.

Exfoliate a day or two before

Gently exfoliate the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Use a soft scrub, mitt or washcloth. Exfoliating lifts trapped hairs and clears dead skin, so the wax removes hair more cleanly. Skip it on the day of your wax, when skin should be calm.

Pause products that thin the skin

Retinoids, chemical peels and acne products with acids make skin more fragile. Stop using them on the area for about a week before waxing. If you take oral isotretinoin (Accutane), you will need to wait at least six months after finishing before any waxing. When in doubt, ask your doctor and tell us at check-in.

Plan your timing

  • Avoid your period if you can. Skin is often more sensitive in the days just before and during menstruation. If you are on your period, a tampon or menstrual cup is fine.
  • Skip sun and tanning for 24 hours before. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin should not be waxed.
  • Leave room afterward. Plan to avoid the gym, hot tubs and swimming for 24 to 48 hours after.

On the day of your appointment

  1. Shower and arrive clean. Skip lotions, oils and deodorant on the area; they keep wax from gripping.
  2. Wear loose, breathable clothing. Cotton underwear and soft pants feel best on fresh skin.
  3. Cut back on caffeine and alcohol. Both can make skin more sensitive.
  4. Take a pain reliever if you like. Many first-timers take ibuprofen about 30 to 45 minutes before, if it is safe for them.
  5. Arrive a few minutes early. You will have time to fill out your intake form and settle in.

What to expect during your first Brazilian

Your esthetician will explain each step and check in with you throughout. You will undress from the waist down in a private room and be given a clean, comfortable setup. We use premium hard wax, which grips the hair rather than the skin. That makes it gentler on sensitive areas. A first Brazilian usually takes 30 to 45 minutes; return visits are faster.

Yes, there will be some discomfort. Most guests find it is quick and far less intense than expected. Deep breaths help. Every appointment after the first gets easier, because regular waxing weakens hair and makes regrowth finer.

How long does a Brazilian wax last?

Results typically last three to four weeks. Book your next wax every four to six weeks to stay on a steady growth cycle. Regular clients often notice less hair and less discomfort over time.
